As previously mentioned I partake in the Book of the Month club with GenTwenty the website where I am also a contributing writer.
The book for March is The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter and How to Make the Most of Them.
This paragraph in the introduction had me hooked: With about 80 percent of life's most significant events taking place by age thirty-five, as thirty-somethings and beyond we largely either continue with, or correct for, the moves we made during our twenty-something years.
I'll be honest, I was a little skeptical to read this book. I had read really good reviews from other bloggers but I hadn't taken the time to read it myself yet. Now let me tell you, I was wrong! This book was fantastic, I was not expecting to relate to it as much as I did. I basically powered through the entire book in a day. It's separated into categories like work and love and I could relate to and understand all of the issues. It also helped provide clarity and direction. I would say I am one of the twenty-somethings who constantly feels like I am on the brink of another quarter life crisis.
Am I make the right career choices?
Am I doing the right things with my money?
Should I be travelling more?
Should I be travelling less?
Am I with the right guy?
Why am I so settled down?
Am I not settled down enough?
Should I focus more on my career?
Should I focus less on my career?
Exhausting right?
I think a lot of twenty-somethings struggle with similar things all the time. Although The Defining Decade won't solve all your issues it has a great perspective on what it's like to be a twenty-something today and what types of issues we should be tackling right now so we're set up for later in life. I definitely agree with many of the other reviewers and the author when I saw everyone in their 20's should read this book. I've already recommended it to half a dozen friends and they're all looking forward to reading it.
